PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY 2024

PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY 2024

This activity was undertaken with funding from African Climate Justice Collective (ACJC).

The People’s Assembly brought together 208 people made up of Chiefs, Assembly members, Farmer Leaders, Religious Leaders, farmers and community members.

Under the Theme “urgent action to mitigate climate change: Action now!”, the assembly used participatory approaches including round table discussions, experience sharing and presentations.

The people’s Assembly was held in Asakraka in the Ashanti region of Ghana. There was a parade through the community to draw attention and raise awareness on climate change. There was a field visit to an illegal mining (galamsey) site where the assembly witnessed firsthand the devastating effect of galamsey on the land, water and the ecosystem.

At the end of the meeting, the following demands were made

  • The government to assist small holder farmers to adapt to climate change
  • The government to ban galamsey and properly monitor the community mining to ensure they follow laid down procedures
  • Galamsey sites to be reclaimed to create jobs for the youth
  • Government to intensify its mitigation activities through its tree planting efforts (Green Ghana Day)
  • Every citizen have a role in the climate emergency
  • Enforcement of laws on environmental destruction
  • Community nursery to be established to enhance more tree planting
