Rural Women confront the global cost-of-living crisis

As part of ECASARD’s activities, we have been celebrating the World Rural Women’s Day every year since 2012 with other partners (Farmers Organizational Network Ghana [FONG], Women in Agribusiness Network Ghana [WIANG], FAO, among many others)
The Annual Celebration of World Rural Women’s Day is considered a practical way of obtaining recognition and support for the multiple roles that our rural women play.
Rural women, the majority of whom depend on natural resources and agriculture for their livelihoods, make up over a quarter of the total world population. In developing countries, rural women represent approximately 43 per cent of the agricultural labour force, and produce, process and prepare much of the food available, thereby giving them primary responsibility for food security.
It is in the light of the above that the UN has set aside the 15th of October to recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.
The 2024 edition of was held at Atebubu in the Bono East region of Ghana.
The celebration brought together over 500 participants mainly rural women, heads of government institutions, NGO’s, FBO’s and CSO.

Under the theme ‘Rural Women confront the global cost-of-living crisis”
The celebration creates a platform for networking, sharing seeds, sharing experiences, providing market information and highlighting the challenges of rural women for the government and other organizations to assist them.
The efforts of the rural and indigenous women are also celebrated by rewarding them, giving them information on government policies on agriculture, by building their capacity and linking them to organizations, agencies and departments to support them.
